Moving Behind the Camera

(An Interview with Tyson Cane)

By Daniel Lee, NYC

Tyson Cane of Cane-Vega Videos chit-chatted with HOOK about going from porn model to porn producer and businessman, about achieving goals in the industry with a little helping from the parents.

HOOK: How did you get into porn?

Tyson Cane: I was working out in a gym in Miami Beach, Florida and I was befriended by Kristen Bjorn, after about a year and a lost of about 50 lbs he asked me if I wanted to model for him.

HOOK: Where you a stripper, or an escort during or before that?

TC: No. I owned a successful cleaning company that I had started after the military.

HOOK: Were you are jarhead?

TC: No, I was in the Army. 13th Bravo Field Artillery. Tank operator

HOOK: What was your experience like in the military?

TC: It was ok. I was very young so I only dated two guys and to this day, I can’t tell if someone is gay or not so I was a little closed off. Sorry no sex stories.

HOOK: Did you self-identify as gay, bi, or queer then?

TC: I have always considered myself to be gay.

HOOK: Do you recall your first scene? What was that like?

TC: It was ok. I learned that day from talking to Kristen Bjorn that this is the industry for me. I have to say I am always conflicted when I am on the set. On one hand I love watching the way the model interacts with the directors, cameramen and staff. However I am equally interested in the process of how a set is run. Each set you are on is so different from the last. You see such a dichotomy.

HOOK: As a person of color, were you at first conscientious of how the porn business tends to be segregated (with perhaps the exception of Latinos), i.e. Asian fetish porn, Blatino porn, or even interracial porn seem to constitute a kind of “specialized” area of not just gay porn, but porn in general?

TC: This is a difficult question to answer, because I was taught very young not to allow anyone to use any kind of limitations to hold me down. Case in point, I was one of the first African American models to work for Falcon. I submitted my pictures to them. If I had allowed myself to see all the segregation I would never had done that and I would have never worked for them.

HOOK: Have you ever used an Asian model?

TC: I did use an Asian model in a movie I made for Cane-Vega Videos. I actually matched him up with another African American model. It was a hot scene and the model was from Korea. The movie is called “Rentboy: The Interview.”

HOOK: So what made you decide to get into the production side of porn?

TC: It was a promise I made to my parents. I told my parents that I was going to do porn they said, “It’s not what we want for you, but you will do it anyway, so go ahead.” My father asked me, “What is the highest honor in the porn industry?” I told him to own your own production company. My Father then said, “Then we will support you if promise to shoot for that goal and don’t stop, until you have achieved it.”

HOOK: Which do you prefer?

TC: I am so fascinated by both. However I am not able to do both so I have elected to be behind the camera for a while.

HOOK: Are there models that you wished you had worked with while you were in front of the camera?

TC: Hands down J.C. Carter

HOOK: Any models you want to work with now behind the camera?

TC: I think I would like to shoot also J.C. Carter, which I am working on now…

HOOK: Tell us more about Cane-Vega Videos. What makes your line different than the other lines out there?

TC: I learned early on that I am not trying be better then anyone else. I am just trying to be the best I can be.

HOOK: What has been the biggest unexpected challenge for you and Enrico to start your business?

TC: I think because we are so new and we do all the work in-house we have not had to much trouble yet. (knock on wood)

HOOK: If there were someone perhaps following in your footsteps, what would be the best piece of advice you could give him?

TC: That this is show business, what you get out of it is what you put in it. Work hard and never, never take the word “NO.”

HOOK: And finally, fill in the blanks: ____ is sexy; ____ is sexier.

TC: Muscle is sexy; Honesty is sexier.
