Doing It All and Doing
It Well: An Interview with Fyer Fli
By Daniel
Lee, NYC
San Francisco-based bodyworker and stripper
Fyer Fli is starting to burn up the video screen, appearing
in flicks for Chris Ward’s Raging Stallion Video line.
Fyer Fli virtually sat down with HOOK over New Year to reveal
a bit of what exactly his hands are saying when they are
doing the talking…
HOOK: So what’s up with the name?
How did you come up with it?
Fyer Fli: My name was first given to
me at Burning Man Art Festival in Nevada. There I learned
to play with real burning fire. We made balls of fire on
the ends of gloves, chains, clubs, swords…and danced through the dusty dessert nights.
Fyerfli scrambled from Fire-Fly has more than one meaning.
F*** yer (you are) fli= fly (with an I because I am) Does that
make any sense? So fire is for the element and fly comes from
the dancing girls from the television show In Living Color.
I always wanted to shake my booty with The Fly Girls. I started
stripping with that name at Nob Hill adult theater in San Francisco.
I was performing with Dragonfly and together they called us
the “Fly Boys”. Later he changed his stage name
to Justin Dragon or “just dragon” from Falcon Studios
and dropped the fly. I’m still a fly!
HOOK: And the costumes? Which by the
way—are pretty
fabulous…
Fyer: The costumes are art projects all from previous Halloween
events. In San Francisco, the biggest holiday is Halloween.
I find it fascinating how much time and energy people will
put into costume making. I have an honors degree in graphic
design and I program industrial embroidery machines for the
largest manufacturing company in the city. I have access to
all that great equipment to make whatever I like, so I too
like to get dressed up all crazy and party like a rockstar.
HOOK: Where were you born and raised?
Fyer: I’m a Philly boy, yo!
HOOK: How old were you when you came out? Who was the first
person you came out to and how did it go?
Fyer: I was 20 when I came out to my
parents. My friends have always known I liked boys. It’s obvious. I was bisexual
up until I was 20 and by the time I was done lickin’ pussy,
I decided to let my parents know on the same day. I took my
dad out for Chinese food and told him over dinner. I called
my mother. They both were only concerned that I wouldn’t
make them grandparents.
HOOK: How did you get started in bodywork? How long ago was
that?
Fyer: At the age of 16, I started by
taking my cousin Judah’s
class in shiatsu which is a form of energy massage. He was
a shiatsu and reiki master. From there I really just enjoy
the sense of touch. I love to rub on people and make everyone
around me feel better. Some people say I have a magic healing
touch. I feel if you have a gift, share it with the world.
There’s a reason I say I give the best massages in San
Francisco. At least I’ve never gotten any complaints
so far.
HOOK: How do you help a nervous client relax?
Fyer: I think I get more nervous then my clients. It is always
my concern that they be completely comfortable and relaxed.
I always use hot lotion during a massage, which is very soothing.
Calming music. Candlelight. I always find a way to give my
clients exactly what they want, and I think that helps them
to be quite content.
HOOK: What is the funniest thing a client has told you while
you were massaging him?
Fyer: The clients that tell me they
are married and have children and they don’t want to get caught paying boys for erotic
massages. I think that’s hilarious. Moms somehow always
know everything. They have crazy radar for trouble that’s
more powerful than any fag’s “gaydar.”
HOOK: How do you handle clients with hygiene issues?
It’s rare, but I have let clients shower at my house…and
I have special towels for them. As for other issues, it’s
not always a clients physical appearance that stimulates me
as much as there energy and enjoyment of being with me. The
more a client enjoys my attention, the better the experience
will become, even if they have issues.
HOOK: Do you prefer in or out calls? Why?
Fyer: When you can make great money
without leaving your bedroom, that’s the life for me. I bring an element of comfort
to my home that few people can match. I enjoy being home as
much as possible, but my schedule often doesn’t permit,
so I prefer in calls just to have an excuse to be home for
a few extra hours.
HOOK: You also just started doing films with Raging Stallion
Studios. How did that all come about?
Fyer: Being in the business, it seems
to me all the porn companies are aware of each other and
know what the other is doing. They know who is working for
who… even if the models and
viewers don’t. Raging Stallion saw me in Manplay 3 and
4 by Titan and they were so impressed with my performance,
they said they had to cast me. My Raging Stallions performance
led to more work with All World Video, Factory Video, and even
Treasure Island Media.
HOOK: I saw you in Gaydreams and you were quite impressive!
You have
great pelvic rhythm, which I think is missing in porn. But
tell us, is Hawk Rollin’s ass as yummy as it looks?
Fyer: Hawk’s ass was perfect. He is one of the hottest
new stars in porn. The camera can’t get a bad angle on
him. However, like I mentioned earlier, I get off more on people’s
energy and enjoyment of being with me. Hawk—although
he is physically perfect—there was definitely not a lot
of chemistry between us, which made the shoot more difficult
than other video experiences I’ve had. Although you wouldn’t
have guessed, there is a large amount of acting involved in
porn. Some would say it’s mostly smoke and mirrors, no
matter how enjoyable it appears. I’d still fuck him anytime
off camera of course.
HOOK: Back to bodywork though, any tips
on working on a client when there isn’t a massage table
available?
Fyer: I actually prefer not to use a
table cause they are too small. I like to work on my California
king bed, where there is plenty of room to roll around and
really get into my work. I use special techniques I’ve created using
my entire body, and a table doesn’t lend itself to them
as well as a huge bed.
HOOK: One last question – a fun
one: If you could have dinner with a famous dead person,
who would it be and why?
Fyer: I’d like to have dinner with George Burns. After
the “Oh God” movies, I’d feel like I’d
be having dinner with the creator of the universe. And that
would be fun. I’d pretend he really was God and ask him
crazy questions about the universe like: Are we alone or is
there alien life? How does time really work? And why do we
have 200 channels on television and there isn’t anything
good to watch on any of them most of the time? And of course,
he’d still pay for dinner.
